Things are happening! When I started doing SEO, Google was still in Beta – the search engine we were optimizing for was Altavista (av.com), AV no longer exists.
Back then SEO really just meant keyword stuffing. Figure out what keyword you wanted to rank for and paste it all over the content of your page. It didn’t matter if the content made no sense. The engines quickly caught on to what SEO’s were doing and they started getting much smarter…
Fast forward 20 plus years and now AI is shaking up the SEO world. AI optimization (AEO) is quickly moving to the forefront. Platforms like ChatGPT, Bard and Gemini promise a whole new world of potential.
Searching will no longer be a passive task; enter your query and pick one of the top results. With AI you can actually further query those results to hone in on the exact result that meets your criteria.

What Are AI Search Results?
AI engines are conversational. You don’t have to just type in a keyword (“plumber near me“) and click to the result. Sure, you can do that but you can also get real specific. For example, you can type (or speak) something like “my shower faucet keeps dripping, are there any plumbers that are open right now” and the AI will return a list of plumbers that are open 24/7. You can further query that “group” and look for any that have great Google reviews or ones that are BBB rated.
AI understands what you’re talking about, It understands “regular” language and can return results even if the specific words you’re using don’t appear on the websites.
Key Differences from Traditional SEO:
- Conversational Queries: AI is conversational, you don’t have to focus on “keywords”.
- Context Awareness: AI understands what your saying.
- Structured Data Integration: AI bots “learn” about your website by reading your sites “Schema”.
