Amtrak is considering expanding its Northeast Regional service to Ronkonkoma

Amtrak has responded to recent reports speculating about the extension of its Northeast Regional service to Ronkonkoma Station. While a feasibility study is underway, Amtrak has stated that it is too early to confirm any timeline for the potential service expansion.

In a statement, Amtrak shared: “Amtrak is working in coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration and MTA Long Island Rail Road to study the extension of Amtrak’s Northeast Regional service to Ronkonkoma.” The first phase of this process, the Service Development Plan (SDP), is expected to begin this year. Once completed, the SDP will provide clarity on the feasibility, costs, and potential timeline for the project.

Amtrak officials emphasized that the introduction of this service is contingent upon the availability of their new Airo trainsets, which are anticipated toward the end of the decade. These new trainsets will feature improved seating, spacious restrooms, and upgraded food service.

The proposed route would include stops in Hicksville and Jamaica, with a connection to Manhattan’s Northeast Corridor. This service would allow travelers from Long Island to access destinations such as Boston and Washington, D.C., without the need for a transfer at Penn Station.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine previously noted that Amtrak is prioritizing expansions near airport-adjacent stations. Ronkonkoma’s proximity to Long Island MacArthur Airport makes it a strategic candidate for this expansion.

This development reflects the growing demand for enhanced transportation options across Long Island. Meanwhile, businesses in the region, including those specializing in Web Design Long Island, could benefit from improved connectivity and accessibility.
